Abstract

The article provides information on a study conducted to investigate the course and etiological factors of stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP). The study was carried out over four years (2022-2025) on 58 patients who received treatment. During this period, out of 120 patients hospitalized due to stroke, 58 (48.4%) were diagnosed with SAP. The patients' ages ranged from 28 to 85 years, with 35 patients (60.3%) being male and 23 patients (39.7%) being female. Pneumonia developed within 48 hours after hospitalization in 40 patients (69%), while 18 patients (31%) developed pneumonia after 48 hours. The sputum samples from all patients were analyzed microbiologically. The most common etiological agents of pneumonia were Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, while fewer cases of Klebsiella pneumoniae and pathogenic fungi were identified. During the hospital stay, 11 patients (19%) passed away. Chest X-rays and tracheal aspirate examination results were found to be significant predictors of the duration of hospital stay. According to the authors, the development of SAP can be considered an independent predictor of prolonged hospital treatment.
