This study investigated the association between polymorphisms of the endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) gene T-786C and G894T and the development of diabetic nephropathy (DN) in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) in the Azerbaijani population. The participants included 130 patients divided into groups based on the stages of DN: microalbuminuria, macroalbuminuria, and a control group. The results indicated that the CC genotype of the eNOS 786T>C polymorphism is associated with a high risk of macroalbuminuria (OR = 3,11, 95% CI = 1,10-8,73). A statistically significant relationship was also found between the G894T polymorphism and the risk of macroalbuminuria. These findings underscore the role of eNOS polymorphisms as potential biomarkers for assessing susceptibility to DN. Thus, the results highlight the importance of further research into the impact of eNOS polymorphisms on kidney function and their interactions with other genetic factors, which may enhance the understanding of the mechanisms underlying DN development and contribute to prevention strategies for patients with T2D.
