This article presents the results of a research study conducted to investigate allergic reactions and the condition of the immune system in children undergoing treatment for ascariasis and giardiasis, both before and after therapy.
For this purpose, 134 children undergoing treatment for the aforementioned pathologies were included in the study. The first group consisted of 28 children diagnosed with the intestinal form of ascariasis, while the second group included 25 children with the manifest form of giardiasis. A control group was composed of 81 children without parasitic invasion. Allergic status was assessed through the determination of immunoglobulin E levels using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. In addition, subpopulations of T-lymphocytes in blood serum – CD3+, CD4+, CD8+, and CD22+ – were also determined using the ELISA method. All examinations were conducted both before and after treatment. The study revealed that signs of allergic inflammation in children with ascariasis and giardiasis were 1.9 times more prevalent compared to the control group. Additionally, before treatment, the concentration of immunoglobulin E in the blood serum of these children was significantly elevated. Furthermore, the subpopulations of T- and B-lymphocytes in children with ascariasis and giardiasis were found to be significantly reduced in comparison to those in the control group.
