The article provides information on the nature and frequency of complications associated with thyroid surgery and the factors that affect them. The study retrospectively examined the results of surgical treatment of 481 patients who underwent thyroidectomy (TE) surgery for benign and malignant thyroid diseases at the Teaching Surgery Clinic of the Azerbaijan Medical University and Real Hospital (Baku) in 2015–2021. The same surgical team performed the operations. Temporary and permanent lesions of the recurrent laryngeal nerve were observed in a total of 2.7% and 4.0% of cases. Transient vocal cord paralysis was detected in 13 patients (2.7%) in the postoperative period. Total thyroidectomy for thyroid carcinoma, recurrent goiter, and autoimmune thyroiditis, especially the surgeon's experience, were found to be major risk factors for recurrent laryngeal nerve damage.
